The Middle East
The Middle East dates back to prehistoric times. It is the focal point in many religious writings, as Jerusalem is located there. Power has shifted many times throughout the Middle East, and the area is generally defined by such turmoil. Israel, a country of the Middle East, has always been in turmoil. Though a strong and powerful nation, they have amassed many enemies. In 1947, the United Nations had to decide what to do with the Palestinian uprising that had occurred. After much deliberation, the council decided to create an independent Jewish state, an independent Arab state, and the City of Jerusalem. This caused problems, as Israel and Palestine has been warring since the dawn of time. Palestinians, and members of other Middle Eastern countries raided Israeli borders numerous times, due to the controversies surrounding the creation of an independent Jewish state. The majority of the Middle East is Muslim, and felt as if a powerful Jewish nation created unbearable friction. Over the years, the Middle East has been involved in numerous conflicts, many of them centered upon Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza. Recently, the United Nations have involved themselves in Middle Eastern affairs to see an end to the bloody conflict surrounding the region.

Iraq
In 2003, American military forces invaded Iraq, stating that the nation had failed to abandon its nuclear and chemical weapons programs. Following the incursion, the United States forces established the Coalition Provisional Authority, a body that would govern Iraq. Two decisions were made by the CPA: To expel suspicious members of the Iraqi government, and to disband the Iraqi army. The following years saw increased hostility between the Sunnis and Shias, two religious factions of Iraq. In 2006, Saddam Hussein was publicly executed for his use of oppressive totalitarian rule. In 2007, the United States government declared Iraq to be in a state of civil war. Around 2009, United States troops began to withdraw from Iraq. Crime and violence in Iraq began to spike, but the civilian death rate had dropped significantly. On the morning of December 18, 2011, the final contingent of troops was withdrawn from Iraq. The United States still holds two bases and 4000 troops on Iraqi soil. Despite the UN's best efforts, Insurgent forces remain active.
