The United Nations was created on January 1, 1942, in the midst of the Second World War. The name "United Nations" was coined by American president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Representatives from twenty-six nations, including the United States, Britain, and France., pledged their governments to the UN and vowed to continue fighting against Hitler's tyranny. The nations involved created a system of international organizations to collaborate on global issues. Eventually, the International Telecommunication Union and the Universal Postal Union became specialized agencies under the United Nations. In 1899, the UN established systems for preventing wars and drafting rules of warfare. In 1945, the United Nations charter was drafted by delegates of the United States, China, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom. The United Nations officially came into being in 1945. Every October 24th, United Nations Day is celebrated.
General Assembly
The General Assembly is the head deliberative body of the United Nations. The assembly makes important decisions on admission of new members, peace, security, and budgetary matters. Each country in the United Nations gets one vote, and the assembly has created many councils. A new President is elected during each session.
International Court of Justice
The International Court of Justice is equivalent to the U.S. Supreme Court in that it is the top law-enforcing body. Founded in 1945, the International court of Justice has resolved few cases. However, in 1980, the UN has displayed an increasing willingness to implement the court in making decisions. The UN Security Council is responsible for enforcing all court decisions.
Terrorism, and What the United Nations Are Doing To Prevent It
Near the end of the Cold War, several new enemies to the United Nations rose from the ashes of the Soviet Union. Organizations such as Al Qaeda used drastically different tactics than the UN was used to. These tactics are underhanded and cowardly, and spread terror throughout the world. Terrorism is a very critical issue in the world today, because people can't just hijack planes and fly them into buildings full of innocent people for political or religious issues. Terrorist organizations operate throughout the world, but mostly in the Middle East. Iran is practically a nation of terrorists. Terrorism mostly effects innocent civilians, who have nothing to do with the religious or political issue the terrorists are bitter about. The United Nations are taking measures against terrorism. in 2002, the General Assembly drafted Resolution 57/83, a first-time text on measures to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons and explosives. The Office on Drugs and Crime, a council enacted by the United Nations, leads the fight on drug trafficking and abuse, organized crime and international terrorism. The General Assembly has also enacted five conventions: the International Convention against the Taking of Hostages; the Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel; the International Convention for the Suppression of Terrorist Bombings; the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism; and the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.
